This over-exposed photo is from sometime in the late 1970's - early 1980's. Aku Haunio's dad, the late Reverend Haunio tried to get the girls in the canoe club to re-thatch the roof of the halau using traditional lauhala leaves. Unfortunately the lauhala leaves have very sharp thorns on the edges, and after about 2 weeks of shredding our hands, and copious amounts of Neosporin, we rebelled. The roof was replaced with plywood and shingels.
