I would like some thoughts on the following:

 

Race: on a man made lake, race length around  15 km

The crews weight: Master women, the steerer  50 kg,

                          3 paddlers around 63 kg

                          2 paddlers, the tallest, between 73 and 78 kg.

Canoe used for racing: Force Five or Mirage

 

What would be a good weight distribution for the crew? Should the two heavy paddlers sit in the middle or in seat no. 4 or 5 or maybe in seat 2 and 3? Has anyone any scientific facts?

Oh, and what about the rigging? Would you bring the ama in a bit?

New wave discovered by surfers

 

Aileen’s, the perfect wave break at the base of the Cliffs of Moher that exploded on to the world’s surfing radar in recent years, now has a new rival as Ireland’s most spectacular surf spot.

The latest wave, dubbed “Prowlers” by the hardy crew of Irish, British and South African surfers who first ventured out on it yesterday, breaks on an undersea reef about 2km (1.2 miles) off the west coast. While they are refusing to disclose its exact location, the surfers, including Andrew Cotton, reveal they have been waiting five years for the type of conditions required to surf it.

These materialised when the massive swell generated by Hurricane Tomas slammed into Ireland yesterday, creating intensely heavy, tubing waves with 12-15m (40-50ft) faces.

Each time we paddle together, we realize that we are all winners. As we build or maintain our physical fitness, we also relish the rich and unique experiences in life.  Back on shore, we find time to cherish our friendship and sisterhood through a variety of social events.

 

USA CANOE/KAYAK UPDATE

Johnson Wins Three Medals on Sunday Team USA finishes third in medal count at Sprint PanAms

 

Sunny skies in Mexico City yielded perfect conditions for the fourth and final day of the 2010 Sprint Pan American Championships, Oct. 7-10. Two-time Olympian Carrie Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) dominated the racing today, winning three medals. Canoe athletes Itzel Reza Flores (Glenn Dale, Md.) and Pam Boteler (Arlington, Va.) paired up to win two bronze on Sunday.   Team USA finished third in the medal count, behind Canada and Mexico. In a show of great sportsmanship, the Canadian Canoe Federation loaned U.S. athletes a number of boats after a mix up with the organizing committee left Team USA with insufficient boats for the event.   Johnson controlled the women's K1 500m final and won the gold medal by open water. Johnson teamed up with Maggie Hogan (San Diego, Calif.) to win the silver medal in the K2 500m. The duo finished strong but ran out of race course in its attempt to catch the winning crew from Mexico.   The second place K2 finish was a major improvement over their heat and it showed the potential of the Johnson/Hogan pairing. The tandem qualified for the 2011 Pan American Games in the event. In her last event for the day, a very tired Johnson claimed bronze in K1 200m.   "It's always great to be able to lean on a team veteran and two-time Olympian like Carrie [Johnson] who is getting back into form and just dominated the Women's events this weekend," said USA Canoe/Kayak National Teams Director William Irving. "Carrie had to sit out most of last year and we are fortunate to have her back and feeling good in the boat again. It was also great to see Maggie [Hogan] step up her performance."   A young and talented Ryan Dolan (Kailua, Hawaii) won the bronze medal in the men's K1 500m final. Canoe pair Flores and Boteler won their second and third bronze medals of the competition in the women's C2 200m and C2 500m. They placed third in the C2 1000m on Saturday.   Results from the 2010 Pan American Championships will determine allocation of boat slots for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, Oct. 13-30. The Pan American Games serve as a qualifier for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Ching Repeat at Battle of the Paddle California

Dana Point, CA – (Sunday, October 3, 2010) — It was a Danny Ching repeat at the Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle California, Presented by Quiksilver Waterman Collection, as the Redondo Beach paddling powerhouse took out today’s 10-mile distance race. Ching added another $1,100 to his weekend wallet, and his fourth Battle of the Paddle title for 2010 after claiming both the elite and distance stand up paddle (SUP) races this weekend, and in Hawaii back in June.

“It has been an unbelievable weekend,” said Ching. “There’s no doubt that it doesn’t get more fun than this. I love to paddle – kayaks, surf ski, outrigger canoe, but to get out there on the water standing up, catching waves, it’s the greatest feeling.”

Ching led the field of 159 from start to finish, racing in the unlimited 18-foot paddleboard division. He crossed the line in one hour, two minutes and 19 seconds, ahead of Rob Rojas (San Clemente, 1:02:59) and Chuck Patterson (Dana Point, 1:03:52). In the shorter 14-foot division, Australian paddle icon Jamie Mitchell was the first to finish in a time of 1:09:13. Mitchell was pushed to the limit and the finish line by Tahiti’s George Cronsteadt and Maui’s Slater Trout, who were tied for second place just one second behind him.

How You Can Help American Samoa, the Phillippines and Indonesia

During this past week, the world has witnessed the devastation caused by a tsunami that crashed into communities in American Samoa, floods that have swept away homes and businesses in the northern Philippines, and the results of an earthquake that destroyed countless buildings in Indonesia. Collectively, these natural disasters have killed thousands of people and left tens of thousands homeless.

On the Ground in Samoa

"Houses were completely demolished, they were all shattered into pieces of timbers, they were all floating in the waters, and (survivors) were still looking for some missing relatives. I've never seen something like this before in my whole life," resident Maulolo Tavita said.

Power was out in much of the island's eastern district, telephone service was spotty and many businesses, schools and government offices are closed until further notice. Recovery operations are continuing 24 hours a day. Businesses are contributing heavy equipment such as bulldozers and backhoes to the effort.

On the Ground in the Philippines

Philippine Islands President Gloria Arroyo has declared a "state of calamity" throughout the island nation, which lies in the path of a second major storm in as many days.

The second typhoon to hit the country this week, Typhoon Parma has brought winds of nearly 200 kilometers per hour. Arroyo has ordered evacuations from six provinces likely to feel the typhoon's strongest effects.

"There are areas still underwater," said Luc Picard of CRS. People are becoming sick without clean water, he said. "Sanitation is a huge problem," and leading to severe diarrhea, severe rashes, and various diseases, Picard said.

On the Ground in Indonesia

At least 1,100 people are dead in Indonesia as a result of two large earthquakes in as many days, United Nations humanitarian chief John Holmes told reporters Thursday.

Hundreds more are believed to be injured, Holmes said. "These numbers, I fear, will rise as more information becomes available. It's still feared that thousands of people are trapped under damaged houses and many buildings."

Telecommunications are difficult in the region, roads are cut off and the hardest-hit area, including the city of Padang, lacks power and other services, Holmes said. Heavy rainfall also has hindered search and rescue efforts.

The 6.6 magnitude quake Thursday hit South Sumatra (9:52 p.m. Wednesday ET), about 100 miles (160 km) from Bengkulu, the U.S. Geological Survey said. An earlier quake Wednesday had a magnitude of 7.6.
